PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

I.D. Mkize High School is one of the oldest high schools in the Western Cape's black townships. It is the third high school to be established after Langa and Fezeka high schools. The establishment of a third high school became necessary due to increasing numbers of black high school students in the black townships. The school opened in 1972 with 150 learners under the leadership of the late Mr Ntloko. Due to a lack of funds in the Department of Education and Training, the school had to platoon at Xolani Primary School. In the same year (1972) The Argus Teach Fund collected funds... from the public to erect the present structure, which was completed in 1973. The number of teachers increased from four to eight and learners from 150 to about 400. Form 3 was also introduced in 1973. From 1972-1977, I.D. Mkize remained a secondary school until the introduction of Grade 11 in 1978. The first pupils to matriculate were those in 1979. Due to the increasing number of pupils and the need for a diverse curriculum, Biblical Studies and Agriculture were introduced in the early 80's. Since then the school became bigger and bigger with total number of pupils ranging from 1200-1300. From 1990 the number of teachers increased to 39. Rationalization however, had a negative effect both on human resources and the morale of teachers. This affected the running of the school (lack of proper teaching and learning). In the year 2000 the school lost 4 teachers through redeployment and the learner numbers dropped to 1031. Currently the staff complement is 36 educators with 6 non-teaching staff members and 1246 learners. The following subjects form part of our Further Education and Training curriculum: Xhosa 1st language, English, Mathematics, Maths Literacy, History, Geography, Business Studies, Accounting, Computer, Application Technology, Design and Visual Arts The school offers the following extra-mural Codes: Athletic, Soccer, Cricket, Netball, Rugby, Choral singing, Drama, Jazz and Opera The following societies are active in the school: Debating Society, Drama Club , Life Choices, Year Beyond, Leadership South, Library Committee and an Environmental Club Social, Representatives Council Of Learners.
